Architectural curiosities: Hyperion

The tallest wooden tower in the world

The French city of Bordeaux has projected for the year 2020 which will be the highest wooden building you know. Moreover, in March last year, the city's mayor announced that Hyperion will be accompanied by a second tower, Silva, and both will be located on either side of the city's tramway. These wooden buildings will be built by the architecture studio Jean-Paul Viguier & Associés, among others.

The Hypérion Tower will have a total of 82 homes, offices and commercial spaces. It will have 57 meters of height, with 18 floors and an area of 17,000 m² (4000 m² will correspond to offices and 500 m², shops) in the center of Bordeaux. The final budget is around 51 million euros.

Except in the facade (looking to protect the material from the weather), wood will be the basic material of the towers, occupying most of the building surface. The car parks will be on the first level and will be invisible, as they remain as part of the construction itself.

Ecology as value

Hypérion leads a new generation of buildings with a low carbon footprint, an environmental milestone. The stiffness and lightness of CLT wood combined with the resilience of laminated glued wood will allow solving the height issue. The roofs will even have gardens or plant covering.

In short, a new type of architecture, with ecological and more sustainable values, is making its way in this 21st century.
